There are only two moments in the year when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length. The Spring Equinox, or Ostara, is one of these moments. We welcome both the sun and growth this month and honor the Sun’s positioning as its annual pathway intersects with the celestial equator.
As we enter March, we celebrate the Germanic goddess of spring and dawn, Eostre, and tap in to both the balance and equilibrium that this time of year calls for.
Let’s use March to utilize the growth that is on our horizons. As the Northern Hemisphere warms, we are reminded to grow with the sun. Planting seeds of both vegetable and flowering varieties, and nourishing your body and soul is important as we move into this season.
Ostara is also a good time to start taking action on the ideas and goals you started thinking about during Yule Time and Imbolc. What you plant and start now, will be ready for harvest - or reaping - during the coming summer months of Beltane, Litha and Lughnasadh.
Freshening your home and spaces around you is imperative this month, and don’t limit yourself to just your home. Take care of the areas that you spend the most time in: your car, work space, or outdoor living spaces, too. Let’s focus on cleansing and removing the stale energy that has been weighed down by the heaviness of winter’s weight. Use this month to declutter, delete emails, clean your cupboards, and organize areas that need your attention.
The symbols of Ostara will benefit you greatly this month. The colors of green, pink and blue represent this new stage of life and beginings. Think of nature sprouting life all around you, and the sky as it changes from a pale blue to a deeper, richer cobalt.
Take the time to indulge in foods such as eggs, honey, sprouted greens, baked goods and asparagus this month. The more organic, or locally-sourced your ingredients, the more enriching they are for your body and soul.
Shop our stones of Aquamarine, Amethyst and Rose Quartz to bring about tranquility, serenity, clarity and harmony (Aquamarine); peace, purification, understanding, trust and grace (Amethyst); as well as unconditional and self love (Rose Quartz). For a bit of luck, we’re adding Green Aventurine to the line up. Carry this stone with you, or leave it in your vehicle to have luck while traveling (or for finding that perfect parking spot!)
Finally, surround yourself and your spaces with the flowers and plants of Spring. Clovers, Daffodils, Crocus and Tulips add life to every area, so display or plant them for bursts of color and variety.
As we move into the warmer months, let us treat our bodies as though they were our gardens. Nurture them, prepare them for success, and seek sunlight as much as possible.
Love and Health,
Natural Selection Apothecary
